Okay, found a solution that worked for me. in Gmail: go to edit account. find mail.me.com, edit it to imap.mail.me.com. save and quit, try (on one of my devices, I had to force synchronisation in general settings > account. From there make sure you use Google contacts and Google calendars and set them to your default app. The standard contacts and calendars app that come with the phone have sync issues with the Outlook app. I currently set this for all my android users.

It happens because the phone aggressively shuts down apps running in the background. That said, you can add your Google account to Windows and you will be able to access your email, calendar and contacts in the native Microsoft Mail & Calendar apps.
