Generally speaking, and with some exceptions, it is pretty straightforward to correlate postwar P38 serial numbers with the date of manufacture, which began in 1957 @ s/n 1001 and ended in the early 1990s @ around s/n 475,000. A few steel-framed guns were in the s/n 500,000 range. Often the slide is actually date-stamped, which helps.BC means '12. i.e. 2012. The 'ac' stamped on the slide is the secret code for Walther. By this stage in the war pistols were being made with rough machining and finishing.

This slide also fits the hex pin reinforced frame, however the serial numbers do not match. The frame bears the ownership stamp Bw of the German Bundeswehr.Two, the cursive letter following the 4 digit serial on the frame only, not the slide. It could be a lowercase a or o. My source of confusion is that the production dates listed for 1941 Walther dont show any "o" listings at all. The listings for "a" codes seem to be stamped on both the frame and the slides, and in normal lettering, not cursive.
