May 24, 2019 · Serial number of the tractor is C314L 19146LM. Took the points off and cleaned them. They were a little pitted so I filed them down to take the pitting out. Regapped them a little under .020". Was able to get a little spark when touching a screwdriver across the points. Tried a new spark plug but still no spark. The choke works fine, but it acted like there was no spark. I bought a spark tester, the kind that allows you to hook it up to the plug wire and ground the other end. No spark jd 285 wont start. Test the Ignition Module. Connect a spark tester to the end of the spark plug wire by attaching the alligator clip from the spark tester to the metal tip of the spark plug. Wear gloves in case a spark jumps while you are completing this step. Set the gap to 4.2mm on top of the spark tester by using the adjustment knob.
Cleaned off the pickup on the flywheel, ran a new lead from trigger unit to coil, and tractor fired right up. Shut it off, let sit a minute, fired right back up. Let itnsit 10 minutes and now no spark again. It is not the ignition switch as I have the coil wired directly to the trigger unit for testing.
The only reason the VTX doesnt is because the Bosch +4 plugs seem to work better in that particular application. It does not have spark during crank, but as you let the key spring back to run it will fire. If you play with it, it will eventually catch and run indefinitely. Battery is hooked correctly although im not positive prior owner did not hook it up incorrectly. When you turn the key, I should see the dash lights, I get nothing. I checked the bulbs and they are good.
