Really there are 3 main things that cause issues with the sliding doors in this gen (and really other gens as well): the center roller, the rear latch, or the power release actuator. 90% of the time the problem is one or more of those things. I just noticed today that my passenger side sliding door will not unlock all doors when touching the handle (key fob in pocket). I tried it with the "Child safety lock" on and off. All other doors do open as soon as my hand touches the handle.

The assembly comes complete with pushbuttons for opening both doors from the drivers position. It costs about $30 from a Honda parts dealer online. Takes 5 -10 minutes to put in max. The interior of the on/off switch assembly is extremely cheaply made, leading to intermittent sliding door operation.

Dealer is full of it. The driver's door is supposed to work too, of course. A little more specifically (at least on my '99 EX), pressing the unlock button will unlock only the driver's door. Pressing it a second time will unlock all other doors as well. Pressing the lock button once locks all 5 doors.
