When the Nova came out I bought one and sold my 835. I personally prefer the Nova for a few reasons. First, its lighter. Second, I feel it has a better action, and for me it is easier to cycle. My 835 was one of the models that had trouble with the extractor not grabbing the shell when you cycle the action.

It feels thick in your hands. The 870 (or even a 500) felt way more responsive to me. If you just want an entry level beginner pump shotgun - go with the 870. I own it in 12 and 20 and I own a Benelli SBE 2 (which is great) but as a beginner gun, the 870 will last decades, you can beat it up, and it shoots straight.

I love my Benelli NOVA. I have a Mossberg 835. Great gun. But its not a Winchester1300 for sure. I have a Winchester 120 and 1300. They are not turkey guns though.
