The TC40 and TC35 can have a mid PTO, but that option was not even available on the TC45D until the TC45DA came out. It sounds like you are looking at a diagram for the wrong tractor or looking at the mid-PTO for the TC40/35 tractors. I have the printed repair manual for my tractor. I did not rely on anything online for my info.

I've waited a short time with the clutch fully compressed, idle down as low as I can go without shutting the tractor off and it still wants to grind into gear.

Tractor. Just a Scag. Lube the two points where the cross shaft goes through the clutch housing. Rotate the shaft as much as you can to free it up so the clutch disengages and returns freely. When your tractor is running @ 1900 RPM with hydraulic system warmed at least 140F and you engage the PTO, this is what you should see at the PTO clutch test port on the side: pressure should rise from 0 to 120 psi within 1½ seconds.
It can be set to .060 on each bolt by using 2 1/2" wrench's, loosen lock nut then set clerance, hold bolt and tighten lock nut, this will release the p.t.o clutch sooner when pushing pedal down. If your distance is at .060 when you check it then you will have to split tractor and repair clutch.

Won't re-engage when hot. Looking for help with my White LT-1850 lawn tractor. It's 10 years old. Has an electric PTO. Takes me about 2 hours to mow. Tractor starts OK but turns a little slow. I can mow for about an hour but if I disengage, as in reverse, then pulling the PTO switch does not re-engage the deck.
