As long as you find a working vehicle and fill its tank (park next to the pump to refuel directly), you don't need to worry about having a gas can before the power goes out, you can just keep exploring until you find one then siphon a bit of fuel from your car when you need to power the gas station with a generator.
First, you will never encounter this as a problem since there would still be a lot of gas in the map even if is limited (like worring about running out of nails on the map, that will never happen). You'll probably need to live years in game using a lot of gas daily to encounter this problem. There's a recipe in hydrocraft which involves creating biodiesel from fermented lemon mash and then when you wash the biodiesel it will create biofuel which you can combine with 13% of a full gas can to create another full gas can... So essentially you have unlimited gas as long as you have enough potted lemon trees to fill your mash barrels.
The mod has been updated for 41.72. Great news, this game patch have integrated most of the FuelAPI logic. This mean that items can now contain fuel without the need for FuelAPI. FuelAPI will still offer some features such as the large gas can and filling barrels with fuel.
