John deere 4020 problems.

When this tractor was evening used daily we never had any trouble with the steering. Now that it only gets used very little we have steering trouble. The John Deere 4020 was an agricultural tractor model made by John Deere from 1964 to 1972. #1. Hello, While investigating the cause of poor running issues / top end noise on our 4020 we found significant wear in the valve adjuster / pushrod region on some of the cylinders. Provided the tractors does not have any external oil leakage (lines, fittings, ???.) you have either an internal leak in the steering motor piston o-rings up front or a problem in the steering valve under the dash or possibly both. Feb 14, 2021. #1. Directly behind the oil pressure gauge is a small hole in the governor housing. Oil will go through that hole and run down a trough to the oil tube. The aluminum carb was a real bad deal, the big iron carb with vacuum accelerator pump was not much better. In my opinion the carb on the 4020 was much oversize for the application and runs poor at anything but full load.

David Kepner threw away the carburetor on his Deere 4020 gas tractor and replaced it with an electronic fuel ignition (EFI) system designed for a pickup. “It made the engine come alive and results in about 10 percent more horsepower and a 20 percent savings in fuel. And it has no problems with ethanol,” says Kepner.

But the 4020, 4230, etc. use large-frame starters the larger starter-solenoid can sometimes draw - or surge close to 20 amps. When hooked directly to a standard ignition switch or push-button - that gets a little worn - it can cause a problem. Using the extra relay in-between takes the load off the ignition switch.

The 4020 with a gasoline engine was capable of 88 horsepower. This again was seven more than its forerunner, and suffered the same dip in fuel economy. The LP version of the 4020 received an increase in compression to provide over 90 horsepower, an increase of 10. Now to wire gauge the positve goes to ground on the tractor. The negative should go to the wire that is connected to ignition switch. On a 4020 when the hitch lever is fully back the raise valve is held open so unless they have an inlet check like later models the hydraulic discharge valves could be the issue. Check the six weep holes on the left side of the block, make sure there's no sign of coolant discoloring the paint below the holes. I don't see any mechanism for the clutch to over center, but the manual says it latches. You can do this behind the dash by taking off the hood cowl (I think that's what it's called).
